demons:

This remarkable photograph was taken the exact moment of detonation of the Japanese city Nagasaki. Somehow the photographer was just the right distance away that the blast didn’t harm him nor his film. What is most remarkable is that the three people in the foreground are still unaware that anything has happened at all.
The destruction of Nagasaki followed three days after that of Hiroshima on 9 August 1945, and was the act that finally compelled Japan to surrender, ending World War II.

Quote reblogged from Booklover with 333 notes

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

So turn off the lights
or at least unplug the phone
I’m a threat when I’m left alone
How many days
are you afraid of turning off?
Do you feel like letting go?

Quote reblogged from Philosophy with 333 notes

For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.
